How do I switch from my current internet provider?
Keep your existing service running until your Boston Broadband line is installed and tested, then cancel and return your old provider's equipment.
Do not cancel your old service first. Keep it running until our line is installed, tested, and you've been online for a day.
The order that works
- Check availability at your address and pick a plan.
- Schedule your install. Leave your current service exactly as it is.
- Get installed and tested. The technician confirms the line is up before leaving.
- Live on it for a day or two. Do a video call, stream something, work a full day.
- Cancel your old provider. Call them — most won't let you cancel online. Ask for your final bill date and a confirmation number, and write both down.
- Return their equipment. Their modem, router, cable boxes, remotes, and power adapters are usually all theirs. Get a receipt or tracking number and keep it. Unreturned-equipment charges are the most common surprise on a final bill.
Because we don't do contracts, there's nothing to unwind on our side if you ever leave us.
Two things to check with your old provider
- Early termination fees. If you're mid-contract with them, ask what leaving costs. That's their charge, not ours.
- Your email address. If you use an address that ends in your old provider's domain, you'll likely lose it when the account closes. Move to an address you own before you cancel.
If that didn’t work
call (617) 693-9434 and we'll walk through the sequence for your specific situation.
