Why doesn't my Wi-Fi reach my whole home?
Dead spots are almost always a coverage problem, not a speed problem — one router can only cover so much of an older building.
Almost always, this is a coverage problem, not a speed problem. Your fiber line is delivering full speed to the router; the Wi-Fi just isn't making it to the far bedroom.
Run a speed test on a device plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable. If that's fast and the far room is slow, the line is fine and the Wi-Fi is the bottleneck. (See Connect a device by Ethernet.)
Your router broadcasts on both bands, and they trade off against each other:
- 2.4 GHz travels further and through more walls, but is slower and heavily congested in dense neighborhoods.
- 5 GHz is much faster but loses ground quickly through plaster, brick, and floors.
Most routers publish both under one network name and move devices between them automatically — that's band steering. It usually works, but it can leave a device clinging to a weak 5 GHz signal from three rooms away instead of dropping to 2.4 GHz. Turning Wi-Fi off and back on on that device forces it to re-pick.
- Move the router first. It's free. See Where should I put my router?
- Mesh, not an extender. A mesh system uses two or three units that hand devices off cleanly under one network name. A cheap single extender rebroadcasts a weak signal and often halves throughput to everything using it — it can make the far room worse, not better.
- Wire the backhaul — this is the real fix. Mesh nodes talk to each other over Wi-Fi by default, and in a plaster-walled building that link is the weakest part of the chain. Run an Ethernet cable between the main router and the far node and the dead spot usually disappears entirely. In a triple-decker, one cable up the stairwell or through an existing chase beats any amount of tuning.
- Consider what the room needs. A wired desktop or TV takes load off the Wi-Fi for everything else.

- Bring your own. If you are a power user, we would rather you did. Someone running VLANs, their own firewall, a NAS, or a mesh system they have already tuned will do better with their own equipment than with ours — and 2 Gig and 10 Gig are bring-your-own-router regardless.
