How do I connect a device with an Ethernet cable?
Run a cable from a LAN port on your router to the device — and use it whenever you want a real speed test or a stable desktop.
Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into any LAN port on your router and the other into your device's Ethernet port. Most computers switch over automatically within a few seconds.
- Speed tests. A Wi-Fi speed test measures your Wi-Fi, not your fiber line. If you want to know what the line is actually delivering, test from a wired device. This is the first thing we'll ask you to do if you report slow service.
- Desktops, consoles, and TVs. These don't move. A cable gives them steady latency, no interference from the microwave, and one less device competing for airtime — which quietly makes Wi-Fi better for everything else in the house.
- Video calls and gaming. The gain is usually consistency rather than raw speed. Wired connections don't have the sudden stalls Wi-Fi does.
Cables are rated by category, and the rating matters more the faster your plan is.

The category is printed along the side of the cable jacket. Older Cat 5 (without the "e") caps at 100 Mbps and is worth throwing out. Long runs and old, kinked cables underperform their rating, so if a wired test comes back oddly slow, swap the cable before assuming anything else.
Your device's Ethernet port has a speed limit of its own. A lot of laptops and desktops ship with 1-gigabit ports, so a wired test on 2 Gig or 10 Gig will read about 940 Mbps no matter how good the cable is. That's the port, not the line. Multi-gig testing needs a 2.5G, 5G, or 10G network adapter on both ends.
The HX510 has three Ethernet LAN ports, so if you have more wired devices than that you will want an inexpensive switch. It is also worth knowing why the rental is offered on Base 300, Core 500 and Gigabit but not above: a Wi-Fi 6 router of this class tops out around gigabit, which is exactly why 2 Gig and 10 Gig are bring-your-own-router. There would be no point renting you hardware that cannot carry the plan.
